The doula is new in the Netherlands and originates from the tradition of women being supported by other experienced women during the pregnancy and at birth. Traditionally, maternal knowledge was passed down through the generations and all little girls were exposed to pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and infant care as natural events. In modern times it is not uncommon for a pregnant woman to have no experience with any of these aspects of life. At the same time, birth is becoming more and more medicalized, marking the birth process for many women. This is why doulas are growing in popularity. We recognize the powerful impact birth has on not just the baby but also the mother.

To feel you gave birth through your own creative force is empowering. And if things do not go as planned, feeling that you and your partner actively participated in the decision-making involved is empowering. The doula supports women and their partners in this process.
